Living National Treasure
Hamada Shoji, one of Japan's leading modern potters, was designated a Living National Treasure in 1955, and settled in Mashiko in 1930, where he left behind many pieces of practicality in a robust and steady style. In his own words, "I found my way in Kyoto, started in England, studied in Okinawa, and grew up in Mashiko.
